Entrevista a Joanna Maxham

Hoy tenemos entrevista bilingüe, la diseñadora de carteras Joanna Maxham nos cuenta sobre su marca, sus gustos y su futuro. La marca, que lleva su nombre, me llamó la atención porque está presente en el vestuario de la serie Girls, sus carteras aparecen en varios capítulos y son parte de la historia. De todo eso nos habla Joanna. Las primeras imágenes son de la última colección de Joanna Maxham Handbags, y este es el primer blog que las pública, es una primicia mundial (diría Luis Ventura).

What did you study? Where?

I have a degree in Economics from Europe (I graduated in Poland, but studied also in France and Holland) and an MBA from the US. During the first part of my career I was focused on business and worked in strategy consulting for the Boston Consulting Group and later in marketing for IBM.

¿Qué estudiaste? ¿Dónde estudiaste?

Tengo un título en Economía en Europa (me recibí en Polonia, pero también estudié en Francia y Holanda) y un MBA (Master of Business Administration) en Estados Unidos. Durante la primera parte de mi carrera estuve abocada a los negocios y trabajé en consultoría para el Boston Consulting Group y después en marketing para IBM.

How did you started to manufactured handbags?

Ever since growing up I loved design and fashion – however I did not have the courage to pursue a career in design. Following a few years of successful corporate career I decided to follow my dream. At that time I lived in Paris, France and I was lucky to meet my first manufacturer. It was a small Italian factory based in the region of Abruzzio (next door to the famous Marche). The owner of the factory is a third generation handbag maker and he thought me everything there is to know about design, construction, selection of materials. I have worked with him for about 3 years before I felt my collection was ready to see the world. It took 2 more years for me to formally debut the line in NYC during the Accessorie Circuit Trade Show.

¿Cómo empezaste a hacer carteras?

Siempre me gustó la moda y el diseño, sin embargo no tuve el valor para hacer una carrera de diseño. Después de algunos años exitosos en mi carrera, me decidí a seguir mi sueño. Para ese entonces vivía en París, y tuve suerte de conocer al que iba a ser mi primer artesano (hacedor de bolsos). Era una pequeña fábrica en Italia en la región de Abruzzio. El dueño de este lugar era un fabricante de bolsos tercera generación, y él me enseñó todo sobre diseño, construcción y selección de materiales. Trabajé con él por tres años antes de sentir que mi colección estaba lista para ver el mundo y me tomó dos años más hasta que formalmente debuté en New York durante el Accessorie Circuit Trade Show.

How was the Girls experience? How did that happened?

My PR Team worked very very hard to introduce the line to the Girls Stylist and "Costume Department". They have loaned several bags, and we were thrilled to find out that 3 of them made it to the show! 

What change after that?

My brand gained definitely more recognition, and credibility both with stores and with individual customers. The show is very important in the US today and it is wonderful to be part of this.

¿Cómo fue la experiencia Girls? ¿cómo ocurrió?

Mi equipo de relaciones públicas trabajó muy muy duro para poder incluir la línea de carteras en el departamento de vestuario de Girls. Ellos tenían varias carteras a modo de préstamo y nos emocionamos cunado nos enteramos que tres de ellas iban a estar en la serie.

¿Qué cambió después de eso?

Mi marca definitivamente ganó más reconocimiento y credibilidad, tanto como para los almacenes (tiendas departamentales, casas de venta de carteras) como para los clientes individuales. La serie es muy popular en Estados Unidos y es maravilloso ser parte de eso.

In which episodes are your handbags showing? What are those bags names?

The bags that made it to the show were the Cast Away, The Bootcamp and the Arm Candy. We are not really keeping track of all the episodes – because the costumes change so much. However the Cast Away is on the screen a lot – it is the pink soft satchel carried by Shoshanna. The other bag that got a lot of screen time is Arm Candy – carried by Marnie. I am thrilled that both bags will continue appearing in Season 3 of "Girls".

¿En qué episodios aparecen las carteras? ¿Cuáles son los nombres de esos modelos?

Los modelos de las carteras son Cast Away, The Bootcamp, y Arm Candy. No tenemos registrado realmente en qué episodios aparecen porque el vestuario cambia mucho, pero el modelo Cast Away está mucho en pantalla (es el satchel rosa llevado por Shoshanna). La otra cartera que aparece mucho también es Arm Candy (llevada por Marnie). Estoy muy contenta porque ambas carteras van a continuar apareciendo en la temporada 3 de la serie Girls.
